About the BLS course
This is a NAUI course powered by DAN (Divers Alert Network). This fundamental course prepares you to provide proper care for life-threatening illnesses or injuries until professional emergency medical care is available. The life-support skills taught in this course include one- and two-rescuer CPR for adults, children and infants. Use of automatic external defibrillators, bleeding management, assisting a choking victims and responding to a person in shock. The first aid skills taught include conducting secondary assessments, splinting and responding to medical emergencies.

These programs meet the current (as of December 2020) consensus on Guidelines for Resuscitation from the International Liaison Council on Resuscitation (ILCOR) and as issued by its member organizations including the American Heart Association (AHA), the European Council on Resuscitation (ERC), the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada (including the course requirements for CPR-C in Canada), Australia New Zealand Council on Resuscitation (ANZCOR), the Resuscitation Council of South Africa, the InterAmerican Heart Foundation, and the Resuscitation Council of Asia.

About The Rescue Course

This continuing education course trains divers in the knowledge and skills needed to manage risks and effectively handle limited in-water problems and diving emergencies. The course will include the following: assists, transports, surface rescues and rescues from depth involving both boat- and shore-based skin and scuba divers. The course meets the prerequisite rescue training for NAUI Skin Diving Instructor, NAUI Assistant Instructor, NAUI Divemaster and NAUI Instructor certifications.

Prerequisite
  • Age. Minimum is 15 years by the water phase of the course. (Junior certification for ages 10-14 years is allowed. See “Policies Applying to All Courses: Age, Junior Certification.”)
  • Certification/Experience/Knowledge. Certification as a NAUI Open Water Scuba Diver or the equivalent is required. The instructor is to ensure adequate student knowledge and capability before any open water training and shall use skill or other evaluations to do so. One open water dive (which does not count toward the minimum number of dives required for the course) may be used as a screening and evaluation dive. This is not required when the student’s diving proficiencies are well known to the instructor.
    • If Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR & First Aid and Emergency Oxygen for Scuba Diving Injuries (EO2) certification are not offered as part of the course, a current equivalent certification is required.
      Unless otherwise prohibited by law or legal code.
  • Equipment. Students shall furnish and be responsible for the care and maintenance of their own diving equipment. The instructor shall initially assist the student in checking all student gear to ensure it is adequate and in proper working order.
